The director of many hit mega serials and Mohanlal film 'Mahasamudram' has now done a horror based investigation subject titled 'Sahasram'. The title is so, because the hero Suresh Gopi's name in the movie is a peculiar one, Vishnu Sahasra Naamam. It is going to be yet another police officer's role for him. U.K.Senthil Kumar, who worked with the same actor in his previous project 'Kanyakumari Express', is the cinematographer. Bala and 'Kaadhal' Sandhya have also done notable roles. Seven Arts Films is the distributor.

The story is told in the background of a film shooting. As per request from the production controller (Jagathi), the art director Vaishakhan (Bala) reaches the shooting spot just before the proposed day of shooting, for the set works. He had witnessed some unusual happenings there. His personal grudge with actor Sudheer (Suresh Krishna), had caused him problems at the location and he was forced to leave the job. The shooting started and while taking a combination shot of the heroine ('Kaadhal' Sandhya) and the villain, the latter one, who is also the minister's son is killed. The police officer, Sahasra Naamam (Suresh Gopi), who is in charge of the investigation reached there and the truth is found out in the racy second half through a suspense.

The director had kept a good suspense for the story. The main problem lies in the careless handling of some incidents and inclusion unnatural dialogues in the movie. The creator should realize the fact that a movie presentation is far different compared to that of a mini screen. The lengthy opening scene in which the heroine of a movie fall accidentally into the water and the after effects of that incident are all carelessly handled. The sequences involving Kottayam Nazir in the director's role, Jagathi as the production controller, Bala as the art director and who ever related to the film shooting spots are speaking very amateur dialogues regarding their profession. The discussion happening between the director and the crew members on the scenes to be shot, are suitable for a school drama only (it is not good to under estimate the viewers, they are intelligent enough to understand the cinematic things even if they are old in a more professional and serious way).

Suresh Gopi is there in his usual style, but some times he is behaving in an abnormal manner (it is all part of the investigation, leave it). The dialogue delivery of Niyaz as SI, felt odd in few areas. Even if the suspense is revealed in the anticlimax, the director had added a dramatic climax area for revenge, which should have been done more neatly. A senior actor like Madhu is not suited in such a role of the minister. 'Kaadhal' Sandhya is not graceful in the heroine's role. Bala is ok. Bg score by Rajamani is good for the mood. Cinematography by U.K.Senthil Kumar with Ramalingam and Sujith Vasudev, who worked for the second unit, did their job well. Mahesh Narayan is the editor. Action scenes by Mafia Sasi is ok, a couple of rope shots felt bad due to his inexperience in that side.

Even if there are few ups and downs on the making side, 'Sahasram' has got a watchable investigation plot, with a suspense.

Kanyakumari Express

Movie freaks like me has to face difficulty in setting the priority basis in watching a movie, occasionally. This has happened last week also, when almost 6 movies got released. So naturally, in addition to the first come first serve basis of selection, the density of project also matters. Thus, a hindi or an english release will get the same weightage as that of a big one in malayalam. In the current scenario, a movie like 'Kanyakumari Express' may not easily enter my top of the list even after it has got a big team behind it, like director T.S.Suresh Babu ('Kottayam Kunjachan', 'Uppukandom Brothers' fame), script writer Dennis Joseph ('New Delhi', 'Nirakkoottu', Raajaavinte Makan', 'Indrajaalam', 'FIR' fame), cinematographer U.K.Senthil Kumar ('Ullathai Allithaa', 'Arunachalam', 'Unakkage Ellaam Unakkage' fame), young editor Don Max ('Chinthamani Kolacase', 'Tiger', 'Chota Mumbai', 'Annan Thambi', 'Sura' fame) and big producers Pyramid International etc working for a crime investigation subject with Suresh Gopi's coming in "another" police officer's role.

In such a situation, a friend called me two-three days back; he was happy to know that he had seen a movie in advance to me, but warned me not to go near the theater playing 'Kanyakumar Express'. Hearing the name, an average viewer like him thought it to be something like a murder investigation happening in a train, but the reaction (even through a phone) conveyed the message that he is deeply irritated. Anyway since this is a routine for me, I decided to watch the movie of the same director and writer combination that gave movies like 'Kottayam Kunjachan', 'Kichakkan Pathrose', 'Maanyanmaar' etc. I am also aware that the director's last movie 'Mark Antony' was a flop one and it was also with the same actor.

The daughter (Sarayu) of a diamond merchant (Shanavas) is being kidnapped. The CM (Jagathi) had handed over the case to DIG Mohan Shankar (Suresh Gopi). Despite his attempt, the girl is killed. Mohan was not willing to spare the people who did the crime. Thus goes the story (?)

The movie is filled with bulk of unwanted, unprofessional and childish elements. The 'ripper' style attack (only) by the kidnappers, The co-workers sitting like statue for the hero's instruction, The IPS officer coming in 'lungi' to CM's house, The IPS officer running through the roads of Trivandrum city for kilometers, The awkward body language of the new face as gang leader, The use of advanced technology like 3G without knowing the relevance, The introduction of villain in the helicopter (3d made) without opening the doors, The performance and the dialogue delivery of Babu Antony and his actions in front of his group members, The placement of some members with hats at the corners of the room, Repetition of accident scene happening to the hero's wife and kid, The joker like behavior of Tamil Nadu police officer, The amateurish look and performance of the new heroine, The throwing of cell phones by the hero in many areas etc are those areas which may be helpful for anyone to lose temper. The title sequences and the text written on screen in between the movie, lacks clarity. The confusion of naming for the hero is there, sometimes he is called 'Kerala Express', other times 'Kanyakumari Express.

Suresh Gopi had sung a couple of songs, but not attractive. U.K.Senthil Kumar gave some colorful visuals. Editor Don Max gave some fast cuts, but it won't help the movie at any cost. Rajamani's bg score is a repetition of his works from many movies. The only good thing happened here is the placement of 'unedited' visuals at the shooting spot, shown during the end credits.


The journey is too horrible, shocking and un pleasant , please avoid traveling in this 'Kanyakumari Express'...

Sadhgamaya

We have witnessed the controversies and the open fight that happened between directors Harikumar (jury member) and Sivan, after the announcement of national film awards recently. Harikumar, who is still notable as the director of 'Sukritham' (script by M.T.Vasudevan Nair), has come up with his latest movie, 'Sadhgamaya'. Shathrukhnan ('Niram', 'Ee Puzhayum Kadannu' fame) has written the script for the director's story. Sunny Joseph ('Piravi', 'Daya', 'Aanavaal Mothiram', 'Oru Cherupunchiri' fame) has handled the cinematography. Suresh Gopi comes in the lead role here; the previous movie by him for the same director, 'Paranju Theeratha Viseshangal', was not a hit. This is Navya Nair's last movie, before wearing her wedding ring.

The marriage of Yamuna (Navya Nair) is fixed and the arrangements has been started by her parents (P.Sreekumar, Ambika). One day she gets a letter from a known person requesting her to see him. Yamuna thus travels to that place, on the way she has got memories about her past. She was once a patient of Dr.Ravi Varman (Suresh Gopi), who helps her to get out of the mental disorder that happened in her life before. The flash back portions holds the majority of the story part and what happens to Ravi and Yamuna in their second meeting is shown towards the end of 'Sadhgamaya.

The story of the movie is good, but the incidents that covers the mental disorder portions won't be an attractive sight even if it is performed naturally, in any language. Navya Nair did well in such a role. Suresh Gopi's character is little bit eccentric and hence he took the liberty to over act in many portions. The dialogues in the beginning portions, especially the repetition of putting names in the wedding card, is not good. The behavior of the father, when the girl reaches her house with the doctor felt dramatic (it has got the flavor of a similar situation in the movie 'Sukritham'). The voice given to the lecturer at the class is not an apt one; the play portion shown as the continuation of the scene is a lengthy one. The finding of the root cause of the disease and its solution is not presented in a believable way. The romantic song featuring Ravi and his wife (Swetha Menon) must be placed to attract the crowd. The climax of the movie is ok.

As it has to be, no gimmicks has been done on the visual side by the cinematographer Sunny Joseph. Ajith Kumar is the editor. Songs by M.Jayachandran are not the best. Issac Kottukappally has given an excellent bg score in his style, the violin bit adapted from Ilayaraja's old musical album 'How To Name It', has suited the situation well.


The one line story of 'Sadhgamaya', that discusses the mind disorder and its impact, might be good; but the presentation of the movie is not good enough to attract you.

Raama Raavanan

Biju Vattaappara, who came from mini scree field, had written script for movies like 'Lokanathan IAS', 'Kalabham' also; he has become a director now. The title of his debutant project is an interesting one, 'Raama Raavanan'. He has written the script, based on the story 'Manomi' by Madhavikkutty. Suresh Gopi and Mithra Kurian ('Gulumaal', 'Body Guard' fame) comes in the lead roles. 'Terrorist', 'Kannathil Muthamittaal', 'Rameswaram' etc are some of the tamil movies that has discussed the issues happened in Srilanka in the past; now the theme of 'Raama Raavanan' is also related to that issue.

The story starts as Thiruchelvam (Suresh Gopi), reaches the village on a mission. He is given a safe hide out by his supporters (Baburaj, Lena). Manomi (Mithra Kurian) meets Thiru, being attracted towards his poetic works, she loves him. Though her uncle (Nedumudi Venu) opposed it in the beginning, he decided to give green signal for their marriage. But Tiru was not willing to accept her, saying that he is having his own goals. Manomi left the house later feeling bad of her loneliness. The police officer (Biju Menon), who is in charge of the investigation, searches for Thiru. Whether he is able to catch the culprit is told in the later portions.

The lack of a good story and the scripting is evident from the beginning scene itself. The un professionalism in the direction area is evident from the opening bombing scene. To convince that it happened in Srilanka, the director have added the visuals of a bus in Lanka; immediately in the next shot where hero traveling in a bus is shown, it gave us a wrong assumption that both buses and places are the same. The board of the bus is later shown as Palakkad-Madhurai, the director had made fool of himself by showing such such an ordinary private bus shuttling between these two places. The only comedy scene, at the tea stall featuring Kochu Peman and Narayanakutty, is very below standard.

The hero is shown as a rough guy with principles, but his motive, the past or the mission itself is left unknown till end. The continuity is affected in many areas. When heroine's uncle character tells the flashback, in the middle the hero is also shown, which led to the confusion whether that is past or the present scenario. The way in which Manomi meets the stranger who has got blood stains in his body and later helps him by giving food, all felt unrealistic. The blind character done by Sudheesh (his expression is good), playing flute on some occasions felt an over doze. Manomi, reaching the house of Thiru's mother and stays with her is a cinematic coincidence. Every time, police coming in four cars one after another, should have been avoided.

A couple of songs were not needed, most of them were not even having the required visuals. The female solo song has been made vulgar by unnecessarily putting group dancers (choreography Santhi). Songs by Kaithapram are not the best. The bg score by Mohan Sitara reminds the tunes by Ilayaraja (from 'How To Name It' album), M.Jayachandran (from 'Mahasamudram') and also many portions his own movies. Cinematographer is Jibu Jacob and the editor is Samjith (he should be noted that continuity between scenes has been affected in some areas). The place where story happening is not mentioned clearly and the climax is not a stable one. I wonder how can the creators tell the story of issues based in another country without giving any visuals from that place.


Though 'Raama Raavanan' tried to discuss a big issue, the lack of good ingredients and a neat execution, resulted the mission in a failure.

Ring Tone

'Ring Tone', an usually used word in the day-to-day life, is the title of the new malayalam film by new director Ajmal. It has got Suresh Gopi and Bala in the lead roles, with a new face Megha Nair coming as the heroine. The film is a delayed release as we can see late Rajan.P.Dev also coming in a lengthy role here. Shaan, who has given notable theme music for films like 'Chinthamani Kolacase' and 'Tiger', handles the music section of this action film.

The story open up by showing the police lathi-charging the local protesters who are fighting for their basic needs. The old lady (Zeenat) who lead the march is brutally beaten by the police officer (Baburaj), there arrives Rakesh (Bala) to the scene in order to save her mother. As per request from his mother and the friends (Manuraj, Machaan Varghees), Rakesh leaves the town in a lorry, where the heroine (Megha Nair) was also traveling. On the way the lorry met with an accident and both of them were admitted to the hospital. They were later given shelter by the local landlord (Rajan.P.Dev), pretending that both of them were lovers. At this time, Nainan Koshi (Suesh Gopi), an officer from the central government, reaches the village for investigating a murder case. Later, the family members (Saikumar, Tara Kalyan etc) of Megha reaches there to take her back. Nainan thinks that the lovers are linked with the murder and takes them to custody. Megha reveals her story and about the people who came there as her relatives. Nainan and Rakesh engaged in acting against the mission of the baddies, is shown in an action packed climax. (the name used here for Bala and Megha are fake, as I am unable to recollect the original ones).

The in experience and un professionalism of the creators are evident in many areas in the film. The artist who comes as the police commissioner gave a very poor performance. The hospital scene in which the bomb blasting and associated things taking place is treated like a childish manner. The extra artistes who were placed a police constables substantiates the fact. In a running shot, a constable even nodes the commissioner by mistake. The chasing at the hospital is apt for a home video only. The doctor character (Jagannath Varma) is not flexible and he is also repeating the word 'oh my god' many times.

The over acting by the driver (Abu Salim) while drinking alcohol in the lorry, clearly shows that the vehicle is not moving and their singing was dominated by bg sound. The servant (Anoop Chandran) who is shown as a foolish character trying to create comedy, is too horrible. The heroine reveals about the opening scene where the person who does the crying 'act' at the check post, as a big suspense, the body language and performance of the particular guy at that time itself showed that it is not real. There is no use in putting the lovers in a room and over hearing their talk through a microphone, as the officer can question them directly. The relevance of the first song in such a situation is questionable. The heroine jumping from a top, lands on a tree and later to the water below, can be considered as an accident, but if the same sequences are repeating for the hero also, then it should be called as 'unrealistic'.

The art director had tried to show the place Warangal in Andhra by a name board and writing few telugu words on the wall, but he should know have noticed that correct spelling of the place is not 'Varangal' as shown in the board. A board in tamil regarding the public telephone, is the last method to convey that the young hero is now in Tamilnadu. It was good that the board on the bus with places in tamil letters were not easily readable. Like wise, the place in which Nainan's introduction scene is shown as he does the attack in Karim Nagar in Andhra, looks similar to the one where he investigates the case later associated with the young hero and heroine in Tamilnadu. It might happened, as both of them were shot in the hilly outskirts of Kerala. (If cheating has to be done, it should be executed without being noticed by others).

Cinematography by Bijoy Vargheese is good. Editor Rathish Ravi might have suffered a lot, as the timing in cutting the frames were not proportionate in most of the scenes. Songs given by Shaan is ok, but the bg score done by him is not good and the loops were mismatching in majority of the areas. Such a kind of rap sounds used for shots featuring the officer and his team was not at all needed. Police roles are like tooth brushing experience for Suresh Gopi these days. Bala is as usual. The new heroine, Megha Nair's looks are not the best in some angles. The story of the film is not bad, but the script by Sathish Kumar and the presentation of the film by the debutant Ajmal happened to be the main problem. The creators are promising, so they should do their home work and come up with a better project next time.


The content of 'Ring Tone' is not attractive as its title, hence it is not a promotable one.

Kadaaksham

I didn't get a chance to watch films like 'Kaatu Vannu Vilichappol' and 'Nottam'. Though those two films were not that big to be promoted, the second one caught attention due to the placement of 'pachappanam thathe...' song in it. Now the director of the particular films, Sasi Pravaoor had come up with a new project named 'Kadaaksham'. The film is in the news due to the inclusion of a remake song, 'praananaathan enikku nalkiya...' by Irayamman Thampi. More over, this film got the award for the best story in the state awards announced recently. The first scene of the film itself gave a clear picture on the "standard" of the film and its director.

Fed up by the outcome, I am not taking an effort to recollect the character names here, so quoting the artists as it is... The protagonist Swetha Vijay works as a servant in the house where Suresh Gopi, his wife Swetha Menon and their daughter lives. She has to face many mental and physical tortures from many peoples. She is always doubtful by the behavior of peoples around him. The sales man in the shop, the jeep driver, the old man in the house, the servant and the house owner himself became the culprits by trying to molest her in different situations. Her husband (Jagathi) is a drama artist. He is a drunken man always and one stage he even tried to send her daughter forcibly to act in the film, even after she resisted it. Thus to save her daughter from her husband, she sends her to Bangalore for a job. At this time, Swetha Menon leaves to London. The servant takes care of their daughter. At one stage, she leaves the house to Bangalore to bring her daughter back, pretending that she is not safe there. After months, Suresh's wife reached native, they both went to their servant's house, met her husband and the real truth behind her life is revealed.

'Kadaaksham' is a hopeless and intolerable movie, due to its unprofessional presentation and the worst performance by the debutant Swetha Vijay, who did the lead role in the film. Her body language is too awkward and acting is unrealistic. Her running shots (used any times in the movie) resembles the 10 foot taller characters like "Naavi" in the film 'Avataar'. The tall girl is not suited for such a role (may be she will be good in modern outfits, but for a servant character she is a wrong choice). Her lip movements are also not stable and she acts looking here and there. I still can't understand, without doing proper dress rehearsals, how can she be placed in an important character like this, the director should answer this.

The drama scenes featuring Jagathi is too lengthy and will make us restless. The song and its visuals featuring the drama artists are not good. The relationship between Suresh Gopi and Swetha Menon is not portrayed properly. The director had unnecessarily incorporated the romantic bed room scenes by them, it gives a wrong message and might be useful only to attract a few more people to theaters. Another black mark in the movie is the background score used, which should be the back bone for such kind of movies. The experienced music director in the field, Johnson had given a childish and amateur music which had polluted the whole environment. The remake song by M.Jayachandran-Chitra is not good enough to be compared with the old one with Devarajan-Madhuri.

The only positive in the film is the situation happened in the last 5-10 minutes, where the whole story happened so far is shown in a reverse way, all of them being imagination by the central character (a resemblance with the film 'Bhoothakkannaadi').


'Kadaaksham' has got a presentable story outline; if it is done neatly by placing a professional artist as the central character, then the output would have been better and a promotable one.

Janakan

After films like 'Pakal Nakshatrangal' and 'Twenty 20', two stars Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi decided to act together once again in the new project named 'Janakan'. The success of films like 'To Harihar Nagar', 'Robinhood', 'Happy Husbands', Inn Ghost House Inn' etc proves that this is the correct time to launch another multi star project. In addition to this, the main back bone for this film is none other than S.N.Swamy, who is the master brain behind maximum crime thrillers. His previous work, 'Rahasya Police' with Jayaram and K.Madhu was not a hit. 'Janakan' is directed by debutant N.R.Sanjeev (formerly Saji Paravoor), who has once associated with K.Madhu (in 'Sethuramayyar CBI) and Suresh Krishnan (in 'Achaneyanenikkistam'). The film is distributed by Maax Lab.

The film opens by showing the police party searching for Viswam (Suresh Gopi) and his two friends (Biju Menon and Harisree Asokan), who got convicted in murder incidents. Escaping from the police, they reach the house of a criminal lawyer, Sooryanarayanan (Mohanlal). Viswam tells his story and what all happened these days that lead to their present situation. By this time police reaches Soorya's house, but they were not able to catch them. In the morning, a big police force reached there and how Soorya handles the situation is shown in the end portions of 'Janakan'. The first few scenes, showing the police searching itself is lagging. The minister's son in the car escaping from the police is not created professionally, the continuity in ACP Vijayakumar's character is also a problem in the particular scene. The scene in which Viswam roaring in front of the minister is good, but the director had made it amateurish by showing it in different shots at a time. The tamil actor Sambath, who has not done any lengthy roles so far, is given an important villain role here. He is apt for the role, but the problem happened is in his flexibility which he managed a lot by using dubbing artist Shobi Thilakan's voice. The introduction shots of the DJ character is also not done in the best way. The way in which Vijayakumar fixing his cap felt un realistic most of the time. The cracking of joke towards the end by Harisree Asokan's character in such a mood should have been avoided. The climax shot in the film was unnecessary and it created a negative impact on the whole film also.

The new director, N.R.Sanjeev who came to the film field from the mini screen, had presented the film in an ordinary way only. In an investigative film like this you need more speed in the story telling, some gimmicks in the visuals and the fast cuts also required. In that way, cameraman Sanjeev Shankar and editor G.Murali did not gave an extra ordinary output. Years before, S.N.Swamy wrote a film for K.Madhu-Suresh Gopi named 'Nariman', the motive of the central character there was to expose the wrong function of the judiciary body. Through 'Janakan' also, the script writer had tried to say something which is related to the previous theme. He has made his job easier by creating (deliberately) the minister's son and police officer's daughter as friends for the central girl character which helped him for doing such a climax. You can't have any big suspense here, which you will usually witness in films like this. Here everything is straight, with a (demanded) twist in the climax. The theme of 'Janakan' is having some coincidences with Suresh Gopi-Pasupathi film 'Vairam'.

The main attraction in the film is Mohanlal. It is he who make the film lively, with his excellent performance. Suresh Gopi also gave a good support with his controlled acting.


No need to expect much from a film like 'Janakan', but the theme is a socially related one, which has been in the news in the recent past. More over, you will also be lucky to see the two superstars coming in ordinary roles after a gap.

Vairam

Though director MA Nishad has given socio-relevant subjects like 'Pakal' (issue of farmers), 'Nagaram' (issue of wastage dumbing) and 'Aayudham' (issue of terrorism), he has not got a big success so far. He came to the field as a producer ('Dreams' and 'Oraal Mathram'). Now his latest film has got a big star cast like Sureshgopi, Pasupathi, Mukesh, Jayasurya, Meera Vasudev, Samvritha Sunil, Rekha etc. Script is by Cherian Kalpakavadi. His previous projects like 'Banaras' and 'Bharya Swantham Suhruthu' didn't do well; but he has got films like 'Lal Salam', 'Ulladakkam' etc in his credits)


To give a promotional campaign for the film is the liberty of the creators. It will be good if we are getting a vague idea regarding the project that we are going to watch. I am telling this since i happened to see the video promo of the particular film in the television. The story was crystal clear from the visuals; what all are happening from the beginning to the end is evident there. Such a practice is not good, the director should have been more careful while cutting the promos. (I dont know whether this thing is unique in my case with the experience!).


The film has got the story of a honest bank manager (Pasupathi, 'Virumandi', 'Veyil' fame), who is transferred to Kerala. Born in tamilnadu, he came here with his malayalee wife (Meera Vasudev) and daughter (Dhanya, 'Thalappavu', 'Red Chillies' fame). He happened to meet the richest family (played by Thilakan, Asokan, Jayasurya etc) in the town. Though dreamed about his daughter's future, he has to undergo certain problems and tragedies in his life. At one stage he is being jailed. An advocate (Sureshgopi), a police officer (Mukesh) and a journalist (Samvritha Sunil) holds the key in the life of the tamilian. As expected, the real culprit is caught in the climax and the manager is freed.


There is nothing new in the story. As I told earlier, it all happened as I expected. Like the trailer, here also you don't have too much surprises or confusions. The villain is in front of us from the beginning and the enquiry moves through the right path till the end, the climax is also an anticipated one. But the director has tried his best to include maximum family scenes, which he thinks as a crowd pulling area. The combination dialogues between Sureshgopi and Samvritha sometimes felt dramatic. Pasupathi did well asusual, but he struggles sometimes due to the difficulty in language. Jayasurya's character reminds us of his role in 'Kangaroo'.


Shankar Mahadevan sings once again for M.Jayachandran after 'Madambi'. In his 70th age, the legendary singer of south india has also given a pathos number. Rajamani's background score is once again noisy. Editor Samjith ('Red Chillies' fame) gave some fast cuts here and there. Sanjeev Shankar is the cameraman who gave colorful visuals.


'Vairam' is not a boring one, but this investigation subject is not a thrilling one also as you expects...
